My aim, following a career in secondary education, was to follow my passion to develop integrated arts activities for all children. Experiences gained as head of music, assistant headteacher, county music-centre manager and Arts Awards Adviser for students aged 7–19, allowed me to understand how leaning can be enhanced when thoughts, perceptions and feelings are explored individually and collectively through creativity and performance. Music can stimulate imagination, social interaction, confidence, memory retention and wellbeing.
Ava Gets Active, a sequel to Ava Goes Green, is a key stage 2 integrated arts book with an environmental focus and stunning illustrations by Stu McLellan. A unique fusion of fiction and non-fiction, novel stories are interwoven with catchy songs, instrumental music and differentiated creative tasks. (Ava Goes Global coming soon.)
The attitudes and actions of our children towards this planet are crucial if we are to make a difference and maintain our ecosystem. There is no more powerful message in the twenty-first century than climate change. There is no more powerful vehicle for communicating and delivering such a message to children than the performing and creative arts.
