Ofsted and Department for Education have jointly commissioned research into prevention strategies for young people at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training).
This research study will look at the barriers that make young people disengaged, as well as the institutional and local factors that can prevent this from happening.
It will also examine effective practice in schools and post-16 education and training providers that supports transition and helps young people to remain in their post-16 destinations, working with local partners to support re-engagement where possible.
The research will also look at how inspection evidence currently reflects work with young people at risk of becoming NEET.
Researchers will interview school, college, local authority staff, as well as young people to understand their experiences of the post-16 pathway.
The final report is expected in early to mid-2027.
