Radicalised chemistry teacher banned from teaching
Jamshed Javeed, a chemistry teacher from Sharples School in Bolton, has been banned from teaching after being convicted for his intentions to travel to Syria to join ISIL.
The National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) ruled that Javeed had ‘had provided essential funding and equipment that assisted his brother and three other men to travel to Syria and fight for ISIL’.
It added: “One of them has been killed; his brother has been missing for a year and the others have not returned.”
On the recommendation of a lifetime ban from the profession, the NCTL said: “Javeed actively promoted religious extremism from a position of trust as an older professional man over younger people, including his brother, albeit that this was not within a teacher/pupil relationship.
“The panel has had particular regard to the fact that teachers are role models, and can have significant influence over children and young people.”
Javeed pleaded guilty to charges of engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorist acts, between 1 July 2013 and 12 March 2014.
